Blue Phlox (Woodland Phlox)
Phlox divaricata
   [C-value 5]
Phlox family (Polemoniaceae)
Blooms mid-April - mid-June

The beautiful native Blue Phlox is common in our area. It prefers light shade to partial sun and moist to slightly dry rich loamy soil in deciduous woodlands and areas along woodland paths. This spring perennial's fertile shoots are about 1–1½' tall and unbranched, except near the apex where the flowers occur. The opposite lance-shaped leaves are up to 2½" long and ¾" across. Each fertile shoot terminates in a cluster of flowers spanning 2-3½" across. Each light blue-violet or lavender flower is about 1" across and has 5 spreading petals that are fused together at its tubular base.
