Marsh Skullcap
(Common Skullcap)
Scutellaria galericulata
[C-value
5]
Mint family (Lamiaceae)
Blooms
mid-July -
mid-September
The native Marsh Skullcap is uncommon in our area. It prefers full sun
to light shade and wet conditions. Habitats include marshes, borders of small ponds or
slow-moving streams and openings in swamps. This
perennial
is ¾–2½' tall and usually unbranched with light green, square
stems. Pairs of
opposite leaves are 1–2¼" long and ½–¾" across, lance-shaped and
toothed. Flowers occur occasionally at the
axils
of the upper
leaves. Each flower is about ¾–1" long, with a tubular 2-lipped
corolla, a short 2-lipped
calyx, 4 inserted
stamens, and an
ovary
with
an inserted
style. The corolla is blue, but whitish
inside the throat. The upper lip forms a
skull-shaped hood, while the lower lip forms a broad landing pad for
flower-visiting insects.
