 Monkey Flower (Allegheny Monkeyflower)
Mimulus ringens   [C-value 6]
Figwort family (Scrophulariaceae)
Blooms July - September

The native Monkey Flower is rare in our area. It prefers full or partial sun and wet rich loamy soil. Habitats include openings in floodplain and bottomland forests, swamps, seeps and mudflats. This perennial is 1-3' tall and branching with a smooth stem that is 4-angled with wings. It has lance-shaped, opposite leaves up to 4" long and 1" across. Individual flowers on long stalks develop from the leaf axils of the  upper stems. They are about 1" long with 2-lipped corollas that are usually pale blue-violet (less often pink or white). The upper lip of the corolla has 2 erect lobes, while the lower lip has 3 rounded lobes.
