The Showy Aster is native to the eastern states and is not common in our area. It prefers full sun and slightly moist to dry sandy soil. Habitats include edges of dry woodlands, sandy banks of streams and roadsides. It is an upright clump-forming perennial, 1-2' tall, with narrowly oval leaves. In late summer clouds of showy bright-violet flowers, 1"-1 1/2" wide, are clustered at the tip of each stem.
