Kendall County (IL) Forest Preserve District Sunshine
Rose
(Prairie Rose) The native Sunshine Rose is uncommon in our area, but might be found in prairie remnants. It is similar to Pasture Rose but differs in size (it is only 1-2' tall) and its lack of glandular hair on the blossom and hip stems. It prefers full to partial sun and average to dry moisture. Its alternate compound leaves have 9 - 11 leaflets. Each oval-shaped toothed leaflet is about 1" long and 5/8"' wide. 1 to 4 flowers typically form on smooth pedicels at the tips of new (1st-year) shoots. They are 1½ -2" across with 5 broad, rounded petals that are light to deep rose pink.
