 Sunshine Rose (Prairie Rose)
Rosa arkansana   [C-value 5]
Rose family (Rosaceae)
Blooms mid-May - mid-June

The native Sunshine Rose is uncommon in our area, but might be found in prairie remnants. It is similar to Pasture Rose but differs in size (it is only 1-2' tall) and its lack of glandular hair on the blossom and hip stems. It prefers full to partial sun and average to dry moisture. Its alternate compound leaves have 9 - 11 leaflets. Each oval-shaped toothed leaflet is about 1" long and 5/8"' wide. 1 to 4 flowers typically form on smooth pedicels at the tips of new (1st-year) shoots. They are 1½ -2" across with 5 broad, rounded petals that are light to deep rose pink.
