The native Swamp Aster is uncommon in our area. This perennial likes full or partial sun and wet soils of springy fens and wetlands. It is a very hairy, leafy, branching and 1–4' tall with stout reddish purple stems and alternate lower leaves up to 6" long and 1¾" across. The central stem terminates in a panicle of flowers, each about ¾–1¼" across with 30-50 ray florets usually lavender, pale blue-violet, or purple.
