Kendall County (IL) Forest Preserve District

Timothy
Phleum pratense   [C-value 1]
Grass family (Poaceae)
Blooms mid-June - July

The native Timothy is a common grass in our area. It prefers full or partial sun and medium-moist fertile soil containing loam. Habitats include fields, pastures, disturbed meadows, roadsides and waste areas. This relatively short-lived perennial grass is 2–3½' tall producing either solitary culms (stems) or small tufts of culms. Each culm is light green, unbranched, and erect with 3-6 alternate leaves along its length. The leaf blades are about 9" long and 1/3" across, hairless, flat, and linear in shape. Each culm terminates in a spike-like narrowly cylindrical panicle (2½–6" long and ½" across) of densely packed florets that are whitish lavender or whitish blue (until they mature).
