 Wild Blue Flax (Perennial Flax)
Linum perenne lewisii   [C-value 0]
Flax family (Linaceae)
Blooms June - mid-August

Wild Blue Flax is a perennial native to the Great Plains and western U.S. but not to Illinois. The plant pictured below is probably an escape from a "wildflowers" garden years ago but still manages to adapt and reproduce in this location. It prefers full sun, dry conditions, and soil containing sand, clay, or rocky material. It is 1–2½' tall, but often sprawls across the ground. Each stem terminates in a cyme of about 10 flowers. Each flower is about ¾" across with 5 light to medium blue petals.
