Wild Lupine (Sundial Lupine)
Lupinus perennis
   [C-value 7]
Bean family (Fabaceae
)
Blooms mid-May - June

The native Wild Lupine is uncommon in our area. This perennial prefers full or partial sun and slightly moist to dry acidic sandy soils. Habitats include sandy prairies, openings or edges of sandy woodlands or sandy savannas. It grows to 1½-2' tall with compactly branching stems that are angular and hairy with alternate compound palmate leaves with 7-11 lance-shaped untoothed leaflets. Upper stems terminate in 4-10" long flower racemes. The pea-like flowers are about ¾" long with 5 deep blue-violet petals.
