Slender Pigweed (Green Amaranth)
Amaranthus hybridus
Amaranth family (Amaranthaceae)

Blooms August - mid-October

This non-native Slender Pigweed is very common in our area. This weed typically occurs in full sun in slightly moist loamy soil with high nitrogen content. It prefers highly disturbed and degraded habitats including farm lots and waste areas. It is a summer annuall 2-6' tall, usually unbranched. The alternate smooth oval-shaped leaves are up to 5½" long and 3" across with long petioles. The upper stem terminates in an elongated panicle of spikes (up to 2' long) with small green flowers.
