Germander
(Wood Sage)
The lovely native Germander is common in our area. It
prefers full or partial sun and moist fertile
loamy
soil. Habitats
include moist black soil prairies, edges of bottomland forests,
moist meadows along streams. marshes and seeps.
This
perennial
grows to 2-3' tall with a stout central stem with
four prominent ridges. The
opposite
leaves are up to 5" long and 2½" across,
lance-shaped, toothed and having deep
venation. At the
end of each stem is a terminal flower spike, 1-5" long, with numerous small flowers. The flowers are
a lovely rose pink to lavender with some purple near the
base of the lower lip. Each flower, about 1/3" long, has a small upper lip and a long lower lip functioning as a landing pad for insect
