Hairy Wood Mint (Hairy Pagoda-plant)
Blephilia hirsuta   [C-value 8]
Mint family (Labiaceae)
Blooms July - September

The native Hairy Wood Mint is uncommon in our area. It prefers partial sun to light shade and a moist to moderately moist rich loamy soil. Habitats include moderately moist deciduous woodlands and areas along woodland paths, borders and openings. This perennial is 1-3' tall, usually unbranched, with a green central stem that is 4-angled, and covered with long white hairs. The opposite leaves are up to 3½" long and 1½" across, lance-shaped and toothed with scattered hairs. The central stem terminates in several whorls of densely crowded flowers. Each flower is up to ½" long with a lavender to white 2-lipped corolla with purple dots on the lower 3-lobed lip. The upper lip functions as a protective hood.
