 Summer Phlox (Garden Phlox)
Phlox paniculata
Phlox family (Polemoniaceae)

Blooms July - mid-October

The non-native (southern states) Summer Phlox is common in our area. It prefers partial sun and moist fertile loamy soil. This perennial is 2-4' tall and usually unbranched, except near the apex where the flowers occur, with a central stem that is light green, round, and usually hairless. The untoothed opposite leaves are up to 6" long and 1" across. The stems near the apex of the plant terminate in gently rounded panicles of flowers. Individual flowers, about 1" long and ½–¾" across, have 5 spreading petals that are bright rosy pink, lavender, or white.
