Nodding Thistle (Musk Thistle)
Carduus nutans
Aster family (Asteraceae)
Blooms Mid-June - September

The non-native (Eurasia and northern Africa) Nodding Thistle is common in our area and is on the Illinois Noxious Weeds List.  It prefers full sun and slightly moist limestone soil. Habitats include savannas, pastures, roadsides and waste areas. It is a biennial (or summer annual) that prefers full sun and medium-moist soils. It can grow to 6' tall with alternate leaves, 2-6" long and ½-1½" across and spiny at the lobe tips. The upper stems terminate in individual flowerheads about 1-3" across on long erect peduncles (up to 2'). The flowerheads often nod to one side. Each flowerhead has up to 1000 disk florets that are pink to purplish pink.
