 Nodding Wild Onion
Allium cernuum   [C-value 7]
Lily family (Liliaceae)
Blooms July - August

The lovely native Nodding Wild Onion is common in our area. It prefers full to partial sun and moderately-moist soil. Habitats include black soil prairies, open woodlands and shaded prairie remnants. This perennial consists of a tuft of basal leaves from which one or more flowering stalks emerge. The narrow leaves are erect, ascending or arching, up to 12" long and ½" across (or less), smooth, flat, and untoothed. The erect flowering stalks (up to 1½' tall) terminate in nodding umbels (1½–2" across) of 40-60 flowers. Each flower, about ¼" across, has 6 spreading lance-shaped tepals that are white, light lavender, or pink.
