Kendall County (IL) Forest Preserve District

Soapwort (Bouncing Bet)
Saponaria officinalis
Pink family (Caryophyllaceae)

Blooms July - August

The non-native (European) Soapwort is common in our area. It prefers full or partial sun and moist to slightly dry soil. Habitats include sloping banks of ponds and streams, weedy meadows, roadsides and waste areas. It can spread aggressively, forming dense colonies that exclude other plants. This perennial is 1–2½' tall with round and hairless stems. The opposite leaves are up to 4" long and 1¾" across, broadly lance-shaped, untoothed and hairless. The uppermost stems terminate in small clusters of flowers. Each flower is about ¾–1" across, consisting of a long cylindrical calyx that is green and a corolla with 5 spreading petals that are white or light pink.
