Swamp Rose
Rosa palustris   [C-value 7]
Rose family (Rosaceae)
Blooms June - mid-July

The native Swamp Rose is uncommon in our area. It prefers full or partial sun and wet to moist conditions. It can grow to 8' tall with branching woody prickly stems often arching or crooked. It has alternate compound odd-pinnate leaves with 5-9 toothed leaflets, 1¼-2½" long and ½-1" across. The upper stems occasionally produce either individual or small corymb of 2-4 flowers on short branches. Individual flowers are 1½-3" across with 5 pale pink to rosy pink petals. The flowers are replaced by globoid fruits (rose hips) about 1/2" across that become red at maturity.
