Indigo Bush (False Indigo)
Amorpha fruticosa   [C-value 6]
Bean family (Fabaceae)
Blooms mid-May - mid-June

The native Indigo Bush is uncommon in our area. It prefers full or partial sun and wet to moist conditions, usually on shorelines. It is a shrub about 4-12' tall that branches occasionally. The light gray-green alternate leaves are about ½–1½' long and odd-pinnate with 11-35 leaflets with petioles up to 2" long. Individual leaflets are 1-2" long and ½–1" across with a tiny pointed tip. Clusters of 1-6 spike-like racemes of flowers develop from the upper branches. Individual racemes are 3-8" long and cylindrical in shape densely formed by purple flowers that are about ¼" long and tubular in shape.
