 Winged Loosestrife (Winged Lythrum)
Lythrum alatum   [C-value 7]
Loosestrife family (Lythraceae)
Blooms July - mid-September

The native Winged Loosestrife is common in our area. This perennial prefers full sun and wet to moist, poorly drained soil high in organic matter. It is usually found in fine marshes, fens and moist prairie remnants. It grows up to 3' tall with a branching, square central stem with lance-shaped, untoothed leaves that are alternate in the upper half and opposite from each other in the lower stem half. The terminal flower spike, up to 1½' long, has one or two flowers at the axils of each small leafy bract along the spike. Each flower is about ½" across with six narrow rose-pink petals having a line of dark purple leading to the throat of the flower.
