Cream Gentian (White Gentian)
Gentiana alba   [C-value 9]
Gentian family (Gentianaceae)
Blooms mid-August - September

The native Cream Gentian is rare in our area. It prefers full to partial sun and moist to average soil conditions. This perennial is 1-2' tall, with a stout smooth unbranched stem. The opposite yellow-green leaves strongly clasp the central stem. However, the three leaves beneath the uppermost flowers are whorled, lance-shaped, up to 3" long and 2" across, with a prominent central vein. From the axils of the leaves, 2-7  tube-shaped flowers emerge, greenish white, or yellowish white, about 1½" long and ¾" across, having 5 petals with small erect tips.
