Lizard's Tail
Saururus cernuus   [C-value 9]
Lizard's Tail family (Saururaceae)
Blooms mid-June - July

The native Lizard's Tail is rare in our area. It prefers light shade to partial sun and wet mucky soil, especially in a sandy outwash in partially shaded backwater of streams and rivers. This perennial can be up to 3' tall, branching occasionally, erect or semi-erect, often leaning on neighboring plants for support. The alternate leaves are up to 6" long and 3˝" across and smooth or slightly wavy along their margins. From the axils of upper leaves, single spikes of tiny white flowers are produced, about 4-7" long, and semi-cylindrical in shape, with dense whorls of flowers, and often nodding at their tips; hence the common name.
