Nannyberry (Nannyberry Viburnum)
Viburnum lentago   [C-value 5]
Honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae)
Blooms mid-April - May

The native Nannyberry is common in our area. It prefers partial sun, moist to slightly moist fertile loamy soil. Habitats include slightly moist woodlands and low woodlands along streams. It is usually a multi-stemmed shrub but can develop as a single-trunk tree up to 25' tall. Pairs of opposite deciduous leaves occur along the young shoots and twigs. The leaves are 2-4" long and 1-2" across, oval-shaped and toothed. Dome-shaped panicles of flowers about 2-5" across occur at the tips of young shoots. Each flower is about ¼" across with a white corolla with 5 spreading oval-shaped petals. The flowers are later replaced by drupes that become mature during late summer or autumn. Mature drupes are 3/8" long, ovoid in shape, and dark blue-violet.
