Panicled Aster
(White Panicle Aster) The native Panicled Aster is common in our area. It prefers full to partial sun and moist conditions. Habitats include disturbed areas of moist prairies, openings and edges of floodplain woodlands, moist meadows along rivers, edges of marshes and seasonal wetlands. This perennial is 1–3½' tall and branching occasionally. Alternate leaves, up to 5" long and ¾" across, lance-shaped and toothless, occur along the entire length of the stems, becoming gradually smaller in size as they ascend. The central stem terminates in a panicle of white flowers up to 8" long and 4" across. Each daisy-like flower spans ½–¾" across and consists of 20-40 white ray florets that surround a dense head of numerous disk florets initially yellow, but later becoming orange-red.
