 Prairie Indian Plantain (Groovestem)
Arnoglossum plantagineum   [C-value 10]
Aster family (Asteraceae)
Blooms July

The native Prairie Indian Plantain is uncommon in our area. It prefers full to partial sun, moist conditions, and soil containing some decaying organic matter. Habitats include moist black soil prairies, moist meadows along rivers, savannas, marshes, fens and calcareous seeps. This perennial initially forms a tuft of low basal leaves and then bolts, becoming 3-5' tall and unbranched. The lower leaves are up to 7" long and 4" across and broadly elliptic in shape with petioles up to 4" long. The central stem terminates in a flat-headed panicle of flowers spanning 3-10" across. The flowers are about 5/8" long and 3/8" across and greenish white to white.
