Rue Anemone
Anemonella thalictroides   [C-value 7]
Buttercup family (Ranunculaceae)
Blooms April - May

The native Rue Anemone is uncommon in our area. It prefers dappled sunlight during the spring, but tolerates considerable shade later in the year. It thrives in a slightly moist to slightly dry soil with loose loam and rotting organic material. Habitats include slightly moist to dry deciduous woodlands, wooded slopes, and thinly wooded bluffs. This perennial spring flower is 4-8" tall with stems that are light green to reddish purple, unbranched, and hairless. The stems terminate in whorls of 3 leaflets, each up to 1½" long and 1" across and broadly oblong in shape with 3 blunt lobes on the outer margins. A loose umbel of 1-5 flowers occurs immediately above the terminal leaves. Each flower has 5-10 petal-like sepals, a dense cluster of small green pistils in the center, and a ring of conspicuous stamens. The petal-like sepals are white or pinkish white, while the stamens have white filaments and yellow anthers.
