Snow-on-the-Mountain
Euphorbia marginata   [C-value 0]
Spurge family (Euphorbiaceae)
Blooms mid-July - September

Snow-on-the-Mountain is native to the western states but is rarely found in our area. It is occasionally cultivated in gardens, from where it sometimes escapes. It prefers full sun and slightly moist to dry well-drained soil. Habitats include upland prairies, pastures and waste areas. This plant is a summer annual that becomes 1-2' tall, branching frequently and often having a bushy appearance. The alternate leaves are 1½–3½" long and ½–1" across with smooth margins. It is the variegated color of the upper tier of leaves - green with white leaf margins - that make this plant an eye-catching ornamental. The upper stems terminate in small clusters of white narrowly cup-shaped floral structures, about 1/4" across, containing both male and female flowers.
