Trout Lily (White Fawn Lily)
Erythronium albidum   [C-value 5]
Lily family (Liliaceae)
Blooms April

The native Trout Lily is common in our area. It prefers dappled sunlight during the spring and moist to slightly moist rich loamy soil with decaying leaf mould. Habitats include slightly moist deciduous woodlands and gentle slopes in wooded areas. This lovely perennial is 4-6" tall, consisting of 1-2 basal leaves and a flowering stalk with a single flower. The basal leaves are up to 6" long and 2" across. The upper leaf surface is mottled pale green and brownish or grayish green and often waxy. A naked flowering stalk develops between the basal leaves of mature plants that nods downward at its apex, where the flower occurs. Each nodding flower is about 1½" long and across with 6 white tepals and 6 stamens with long yellow anthers.
