White Clover
Trifolium repens
Bean family (Fabaceae
)
Blooms mid-May - October

The non-native (European) White Clover is very common in our area. It has been used in farming as forage and hay and as a cover crop for fixing nitrogen into the soil. It prefers full or partial sun, average moisture and a loamy soil. Habitats include pastures, fields, grassy meadows, lawns, parks and mowed areas along roads. This perennial plant is about 6" tall, branching from the base. Initially, it produces several alternate compound 3-parted leaves from stems up to 1' long sprawling along the ground. Each of the 3 leaflets is about ¾" long and about half as wide. Globular-shaped flowerheads about ¾" across are produced on long naked stalks. Each flowerhead has 20-50 flowers that are narrowly tubular with 5 petals that are white or pinkish white.
