Woodland Knotweed (Jumpseed)
Persicaria virginiana (Polygonum virginianum)   [C-value 2]
Buckwheat family (Polygonaceae)
Blooms mid-July - mid-September

The native Woodland Knotweed is common in our area. It prefers part shade in moist woods and thickets. This perennial is 1-4' tall and branching with oval-shaped untoothed leaves up to 6" long and 3" wide. There is usually a terminal flower spike, which sometimes branches into multiple flower spikes. The flower spike is 4-16" long with tiny flowers occurring along the spike that are white to greenish white, 1/8" long, with 4 pointed-tip petals. The flowers are later replaced with oval-shaped dry seeds. When the seeds are ripe, they jump off the stem at the slightest touch, hence the other common name "Jumpseed".
