Bellwort (Large-Flowered Bellwort)
Uvularia grandiflora   [C-value 7]
Lily family (Liliaceae)
Blooms mid-April - May

The native Bellwort is uncommon in our area. It prefers dappled sunlight during the spring and light shade during the summer with moderately moist rich loamy soil. Habitats include slightly moist deciduous woodlands, wooded areas along streams and edges of shady seeps. This perennial lily is about 1-2' tall with a central stem branching (usually) into 2 or 3 side stems. The alternate leaves are stem-encircling and up to 6" long and 2" across. Each side stem terminates with a single bell-shaped yellow flower, 1-2" long and nodding downward from its slender pedicel about 1" long. Each flower is replaced by a seed capsule with 3 rounded lobes and a rounded tip.
