The native Black Mustard is very common in our area. It prefers full or partial sun and slightly dry fertile soil. Habitats include weedy meadows, thickets, areas along roads and waste areas. This annual becomes 2-8' tall, branching occasionally with alternate leaves are up to 10" long and 3" across. The lower leaves are pinnately-lobed and tapering to a long stout petiole. The upper stems terminate in narrow ½–2' long racemes of yellow flowers. Each flower is up to 1/3" across with 4 yellow petals that are well-rounded toward their tips.
