Common Beggar's Ticks (Devil's Beggarticks)
Bidens frondosa   [C-value 1]
Aster family (Asteraceae)
Blooms August - mid-October

The native Common Beggar's Ticks is common in our area. It prefers partial to full sun, moist conditions and soil with sufficient organic material to retain moisture. Habitats include moist areas of black soil prairies, moist meadows near woodlands or rivers, openings in floodplain woodlands and young flatwoods, marshes, swamps, seeps, and borders of ponds. This annuall is 1-3' tall, branching occasionally in the upper half with purple or reddish green stems. The compound leaves are usually odd-pinnate, consisting of 3 or 5 leaflets. The leaflets are up to 3" long and 1" across, lance-shaped and coarsely toothed. Some of the upper stems terminate in individual flowers ¾–1" across on long stalks; some stalks may have 1-2 additional flowers smaller in size. The flowers have numerous disk florets that have dull yellow corollas surrounded by 6-10 green leafy bracts. The brown seed heads have 2-pronged burs with tiny barbs pointing downward.
