The native Common Black Snakeroot is uncommon in our area. It prefers partial sun to medium shade and moist to slightly dry conditions. Habitats include deciduous woodlands, areas along woodland paths, thickets and shaded seeps. This perennial is 1–2½' tall, branching occasionally. The palmately compound (5-leaflet) basal and lower leaves are up to 5" long and across with petioles up to 6" long. The middle to upper leaves are trifoliate with 3 coarsely toothed leaflets. Upper stems terminates in 1-5 umbels of flowers. Each globe-shaped umbel is up to ½" across with 20-60 tiny flowers. Each flower has 5 greenish yellow petals and 5 exerted stamens with conspicuous yellow anthers.
