Common Cinquefoil
Potentilla simplex   [C-value 4]
Rose family (Rosaceae)
Blooms May - June

The native Common Cinquefoil is common in our area. It prefers partial to full sun, and moist to dry conditions. Habitats include black soil prairies, open upland forests, savannas and gravelly seeps. This perennial sprawls along the ground by means of stolons and is less than 1' tall. The slender stems and stolons can extend up to 3' and their tips often root in the ground, forming new plants. The alternate compound leaves are palmate with 5 leaflets, each up to 3" long and ¾" across and coarsely toothed.  From the upper axils of some leaves, a single yellow flower develops on a long pedicel. The flower is about ½" across with 5 yellow petals rounded toward their tips.
