Golden Alexanders
(Golden Zizia) The native Golden Alexanders is common in our area. It prefers full to partial sun and moist, loamy soil. Habitats include openings in moist woodlands, woodland paths, savannas and thickets. This perennial is up to 2½' tall with light green hairless stems. The shiny compound leaves on long petioles are odd-pinnate with 3 or 5 leaflets up to 3" long and 2" across, toothed, with some larger leaflets having 1-2 cleft lobes. At the stem ends, rounded compound umbel (2-3" across) of yellow flowers occur. Each compound umbel has about 12 umbellets with about 21 flowers each. Each flower is about 1/8" with 5 incurved yellow petals.
