Late Goldenrod (Giant Goldenrod)
Solidago gigantea   [C-value 4]
Aster family (Asteraceae)
Blooms August - September

The native Late Goldenrod is common in our area. It prefers full sunlight to light shade and wet to moist soil. Habitats include openings in floodplain woodlands, low partially shaded areas along streams and ponds, wet prairies, soggy thickets, fens and ditches. This vigorous perennial is 3-7' tall and unbranched, except at the apex where the flowering stalks occur. The alternate leaves are up to 3-5" long and 1/3–2/3" across, toothed, stalkless and narrowly lance shaped and tapering gradually towards the tip and base. The central stem terminates in a panicle of flowerheads up to 1' long and 1' across. Individual flowers on arching floral branchlets are a little less than ¼" across with 7-15 yellow ray florets and 5-11 yellow disk florets.
