Kendall County (IL) Forest Preserve District Perennial
Sowthistle (Field Sow Thistle) The non-native (Eurasia) Perennial Sowthistle is common in our area and is on the Illinois noxious weeds list. It prefers full sun, medium moisture and rich loamy soil. Habitats include weedy meadows, edges of gardens, roadsides and waste areas. This perennial is 2-4' tall, branching occasionally with alternate leaves up to 12" long and 3½" across, lance-shaped and usually having 2-5 lobes with pointed tips and edged in prickles. The upper stems terminate in long stalks with clusters of composite flowers. Each composite flower is about 1–1½" across with numerous bright yellow ray florets.
