The native Sawtooth Sunflower is common in our area. It prefers full sun and moist fertile loamy soil with high organic content. Habitats include moist black soil prairies, thickets, moist meadows near rivers or lakes and areas along ditches . This perennial is 3-12' tall with little branching and toothed lance-shaped leaves up to 8" long and 2½" across on slender petioles about ½" long. The upper stems terminate in small clusters of flowers, each 2½-4" across, with 10-20 bright yellow ray florets surrounding numerous yellow tubular-shaped disk florets.
