The native Spotted St. John's Wort is uncommon in our area. It prefers full or partial sun and moist to slightly moist rather lean soil. Habitats include black soil prairies, gravel prairies, open woodlands, savannas, woodland borders and roadsides. This perennial is up to 2½' tall, branching occasionally with opposite leaves up to 2½" long and 1" across with rounded tips. Scattered translucent dots are observable on the underside of the leaves. Its stems terminate in tight clusters of yellow flowers, each about ½" across with 5 petals and numerous yellow anthers on long styles.
