Swamp Buttercup
Ranunculus septentrionalis   [C-value 5]
Buttercup family (Ranunculaceae)
Blooms April - mid-June

The native Swamp Buttercup is common in our area. It prefers partial sun to light shade, wet to medium-moisture and a fertile loamy soil. Habitats include moist deciduous woodlands, soggy areas along vernal pools, swamps and partially shaded areas of seeps. This perennial is about 6" tall, although its stems can extend up to 1' long. Both basal leaves and stems with alternate leaves are produced; the latter usually sprawl across the ground. The basal and alternate leaves are 3-parted, deeply cleft and up to 3" long and across on petioles up to 3" long. Occasionally, individual flowers develop from erect unbranched stalks about 2-5" long. Each flower is about ¾" across with 5 petals, bright yellow and shiny.
