The native Swamp Goldenrod is common in our area. It prefers partial sun to light shade, wet to consistently moist soil that consists of loam with organic matter. Habitats include swamps, shrubby fens and shaded seeps. This perennial is 2½-6' tall, usually unbranched with a green to purplish central stem that is sharply angled. The lower alternate leaves are 4-12" long and 1½-4" across, elliptic to oval-shaped and toothed. The central stem terminates in an open panicle of flowers up to 1½' long and 2' across with clusters of erect flowers. Each flower is about 1/8" across with 5-12 yellow ray florets that surround 5-15 yellow disk florets.
