Tall White Lettuce (Nodding Rattlesnake-Root)
Prenanthes crepidinea   [C-value 8]
Aster family (Asteraceae)
Blooms mid-August - mid-September

The native Tall White Lettuce is uncommon in our area. It prefers partial sun to light shade and slightly moist soil. Habitats include openings in moist woodlands, areas along streams and edges of seeps. This perennial is up to 8' tall with alternate elliptic-shaped leaves, up to 8" long and 5" wide, usually coarsely toothed with short stiff hairs. The central stem and upper stems (if any) terminate in panicles of flowers up to 1' across. Each panicle divides into 2-4 spreading branches and from each branch, several flowers droop downward from short peduncles. Each flower is about ¾" long and ½" across with a cylindrical base and 8-14 pale yellow ray florets that spread outward when in bloom.
