Yellow Iris (Y‎ellow Flag)
Iris pseudacorus
Iris family (Iridaceae
)
Blooms mid-May - mid-June

The non-native Yellow Iris (from Europe) is common in our area. It prefers full or partial sun, wet to moist rich soil containing organic matter or muck. Habitats include low areas along rivers, borders of ponds, marshes, swamps, and ditches. This perennial is about 2½–3' tall with large erect basal leaves joined together at the base from which the flowering stalk emerges. The stiff leaves are pale blue-green and sword-shaped. The erect flowering stalk may have a few alternate leaves along its length that are small and sword-shaped. The stalk terminates in a tight cluster of 2-4 showy flowers, each 3-4" across with 3 yellow petals, widely spreading and curved backwards.
