Kendall County (IL) Forest Preserve District White Sweet Clover (White Melilot) The non-native (Eurasia) White Sweet Clover is
common (unfortunately) in our area. It is an invasive
that keeps trying to move into our natural areas. It prefers full sun and
slightly moist to dry heavy clay-loam or gravelly soil. Habitats include limestone glades,
thinly wooded bluffs, prairies, weedy meadows, old fields and waste
areas. This biennial is 3-8' tall, branching occasionally and having
a lanky appearance. The alternate leaves are trifoliate
with petioles
up to 1" long. The grayish green leaflets are up to 1" long and
1/3" across. The upper stems terminate in narrow racemes of
white flowers about 2-6" long. Each small floppy flower is about
1/3" long with 5 white petals and a light green calyx with
5 teeth.
